Finding your WHR
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) just might be the
new health related number to keep your eye
on. WHR measures the fat retained in and
around your internal organs, which is more
dangerous to your heart than the fat just
under the skin. A recent report examined
WHR and heart-attack risk among 27,000
people in 52 countries, and showed that the
higher your WHR, the greater your risk of
heart attack, regardless of gender or ethnic
origin.
To determine your WHR:
Take your
waist measurement at its narrowest point
and your hip measurement around the
widest part of your buttocks. Divide the
waist by the hip measurement. Women
should aim for a WHR of less than 0.85, and
men for less than 0.90. If your measurement
is higher, talk with your Anytime Fitness
support team about helping you set a workout
routine that works for you and also helps
keep your WHR in check.
